About the Event
Join Katarina Koch and Catherine Bowman on July 22 at The Lindley House for a look into the history of kitchen medicine and a bold woman’s sense of strength from the kitchen. Community Chef, Katarina Koch will be making flavorful and soul warming broths inspired by recipes from the book Nourishing Broth by Sally Fallon Morell and The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother by Heng Ou. Science tells us that journaling tones the nervous system and fortifies the heart. Poet and IU Professor, Catherine Bowman will guide you through a nourishing series of journal prompts as we write together and sip on and sample delicious broths.
Katarina Koch is a collaborative community chef. She started cooking as a child, learning from various generations of family members, and was shaped by self study, travel, and experiences living in intentional communities. Her food is inspired by heritage and culture from around the world with a focus on locally sourced and available ingredients. Her own food heritage comes from roots in southern Italy, Lithuania and Midwestern America.
Catherine Bowman is the award-winning author of 1-8OO-HOT-RIBS, Rock Farm, Notarikon, The Plath Cabinet, and most recently Can I Finish, Please? She also edited Word of Mouth: Poems featured on NPR’s All Things Considered. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Ploughshares, The Paris Review, The LA Times and Best American Poetry among other journals. She lives on a farm and teaches literature, writing, and poetry at Indiana University.
The Preserve, Writing our Rural Lives Series Overview:
Join poet, writer, and IU professor Catherine Bowman in conversation and collaboration with community chefs Andrew Gerber, Anna Hudelson, and Katarina Koch for three evenings of food, merriment, and creative writing.
In each gathering we will partake of cuisine prepared for you to enjoy that celebrates local food heritages and history. We will then delve into food memories, stories, place, and culture around food through playful and engaging creative prompts. Remembering cooking, sharing food, the day-to-day dinners and family feasts all conjure up and call forth the stories of our lives. We will slow down and experience the ways the senses can ignite memories and stories.
